Anti-Leishmania titers and positive skin tests in patients cured of kala-azar BJMBR
Viana,G.M.C.; Nascimento,M.D.S.B.; Diniz Neto,J.A.; Rabelo,E.M.F.; Binda Júnior,J.R.; Santos Júnior,O.M.; Santos,A.C.; Galvão,C.S.; Guimarães,R.S..
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), also known as kala-azar, is an important public health problem. If not treated, virtually all clinically symptomatic patients die within months. The diagnosis is based on the Montenegro skin test (MST) and anti-Leishmania titers. Nevertheless, the time required for cured individuals living in a leishmaniasis-endemic area to present a positive skin test and negative anti-Leishmania serology is known. To determine the cellular and humoral immune response profile in relation to different times post-VL cure, a cross-sectional study was conducted on subjects from a kala-azar endemic area in Paço do Lumiar, MA, Brazil, on the basis of 1995-2005 notifications reported by the National Health Foundation/Regional Coordination of...

Brain tissue segmentation using q-entropy in multiple sclerosis magnetic resonance images BJMBR
Diniz,P.R.B.; Murta-Junior,L.O.; Brum,D.G.; de Araújo,D.B.; Santos,A.C..
The loss of brain volume has been used as a marker of tissue destruction and can be used as an index of the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. In the present study, we tested a new method for tissue segmentation based on pixel intensity threshold using generalized Tsallis entropy to determine a statistical segmentation parameter for each single class of brain tissue. We compared the performance of this method using a range of different q parameters and found a different optimal q parameter for white matter, gray matter, and cerebrospinal fluid. Our results support the conclusion that the differences in structural correlations and scale invariant similarities present in each tissue class can be accessed by generalized...

Cerebral blood flow and vasoreactivity in aging: an arterial spin labeling study BJMBR
Leoni,R.F.; Oliveira,I.A.F.; Pontes-Neto,O.M.; Santos,A.C.; Leite,J.P..
Regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) in young and elderly participants were assessed using pulsed arterial spin labeling (ASL) and blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques in combination with inhalation of CO2. Pulsed ASL and BOLD-MRI were acquired in seventeen asymptomatic volunteers (10 young adults, age: 30±7 years; 7 elderly adults, age: 64±8 years) with no history of diabetes, hypertension, and neurological diseases. Data from one elderly participant was excluded due to the incorrigible head motion. Average baseline CBF in gray matter was significantly reduced in elderly (46±9 mL·100 g-1·min-1) compared to young adults (57±8 mL·100 g-1·min-1; P=0.02). Decreased pulsed...

Composição química e qualidade biológica da torta de colza (Brassica napus, L: ) Anais da ESALQ
Santos,A.C.; Fabris,V.E.; Basso,L.C.; Haag,H.P..

Decreased left temporal lobe volume of panic patients measured by magnetic resonance imaging BJMBR
Uchida,R.R.; Del-Ben,C.M.; Santos,A.C.; Araújo,D.; Crippa,J.A.; Guimarães,F.S.; Graeff,F.G..
Reported neuroimaging studies have shown functional and morphological changes of temporal lobe structures in panic patients, but only one used a volumetric method. The aim of the present study was to determine the volume of temporal lobe structures in patients with panic disorder, measured by magnetic resonance imaging. Eleven panic patients and eleven controls matched for age, sex, handedness, socioeconomic status and years of education participated in the study. The mean volume of the left temporal lobe of panic patients was 9% smaller than that of controls (t21 = 2.37, P = 0.028). In addition, there was a trend (P values between 0.05 and 0.10) to smaller volumes of the right temporal lobe (7%, t21 = 1.99, P = 0.06), right amygdala (8%, t21 = 1.83, P =...

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the frontal, cingulate and perirolandic cortices and its relationship to skin conductance in patients with schizophrenia BJMBR
Sanches,R.F.; Crippa,J.A.S.; Hallak,J.E.C.; de Sousa,J.P.M.; Araújo,D.; Santos,A.C.; Zuardi,A.W..
The aim of the present study was to determine whether specific subgroups of schizophrenic patients, grouped according to electrodermal characteristics, show differences in the N-acetylaspartate/creatine plus choline (NAA / (Cr + Cho)) ratios in the frontal, cingulate and perirolandic cortices. Skin conductance levels (SCL) and skin conductance responses to auditory stimulation were measured in 38 patients with schizophrenia and in the same number of matched healthy volunteers (control). All subjects were submitted to multivoxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging. When compared to the control group, patients presented significantly lower NAA / (Cr + Cho) ratios in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (schizophrenia = 0.95 ± 0.03; control =...

Relative frequency, clinical, neuroimaging, and postsurgical features of pediatric temporal lobe epilepsy BJMBR
Sales,L.V.; Velasco,T.R.; Funayama,S.; Ribeiro,L.T.; Andrade-Valença,L.P.; Neder,L.; Fernandes,R.M.F.; Araujo Jr.,D.; Machado,H.R.; Santos,A.C.; Leite,J.P..
We describe the relative frequency, clinical features, neuroimaging and pathological results, and outcome after pharmacological or surgical intervention for a series of pediatric patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) from an epilepsy center in Brazil. The medical records of children younger than 12 years with features strongly suggestive of TLE were reviewed from January 1999 to June 1999. Selected children were evaluated regarding clinical, EEG, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) investigation and divided into three groups according to MRI: group 1 (G1, N = 9), patients with hippocampal atrophy; group 2 (G2, N = 10), patients with normal MRI, and group 3 (G3, N = 12), patients with other specific temporal lesions. A review of 1732 records of...

The size and prevalence of the cavum septum pellucidum are normal in subjects with panic disorder BJMBR
Crippa,J.A.S.; Uchida,R.; Busatto,G.F.; Guimarães,F.S.; Del-Ben,C.M.; Zuardi,A.W.; Santos,A.C.; Araújo,D.; McGuire,P.K.; Graeff,F.G..
Panic disorder is thought to involve dysfunction in the septohippocampal system, and the presence of a cavum septum pellucidum might indicate the aberrant development of this system. We compared the prevalence and size of cavum septum pellucidum in 21 patients with panic disorder and in 21 healthy controls by magnetic resonance imaging. The length of the cavum septum pellucidum was measured by counting the number of consecutive 1-mm coronal slices in which it appeared. A cavum septum pellucidum of >6 mm in length was rated as large. There was no significant difference in the proportion of patients (16 of 21 or 76.2%) and controls (18 of 21 or 85.7%) with a cavum septum pellucidum (P = 0.35, Fisher's exact test, one-tailed), and no members of either...
